Enjoy!
Age 9: I fall in love with photography.
My Dad was having a mid life crisis and thought he was gonna be the next Ansel Adams so he bought up a bunch of photo and lighting equipment and a ton of ‘how-to’ photography books. True to my Dad’s character, he promptly lost all of the fancy photo equipment but not before I had a chance to get my paws on them and become enthralled. I spent that year reading and re-reading those books and learned Ansel Adams’ photography theory by heart.
Age 12: My first film camera
Was a hunk of scrap metal that I had lovingly built from scratch. I loved that piece of shit so.
Age 17: Major in photography in Uni
I started out with a double Majored in Photography and Pre-Law at my public university.
Age 19: My first DSLR/My First Teaching Gig
My school had these awful DSLR’s that you could check out for projects. As terrible as they were, they got the job done. And I was 20 when I took over teaching the Intro to Photography at my university (the teacher wasn’t even a photographer - this is how underfunded the arts program was at my school).
Age 20: First Photo Apprenticeship/Internship
I answered a Facebook call for an assistant for a local photographer who was pregnant and needed help moving her equipment around shoots. This assistant gig led to my first apprenticeship with a celebrity/fashion photographer.
Age 20: Start Shooting for Hire
I had started a jewelry company at this point and was shooting all of my brand’s cookbooks and retail shots. This led to me shooting for the brands that my brand would collaborate with. Which led to me starting to pick up more and more paid photo gigs.
Age 21: My first full-frame DSLR
I worked at a camera shop straight out of Uni just so that I could buy my camera kit (at a super cheap discount). The job was shitty but I got a full camera kit out of it and some amazing friends out of the ordeal.
Age 21: Photography Becomes My Career
What can I say other than I am so lucky that I got to work in a field I love. I still can’t believe this is my life sometimes.
Current Day:
So now we’re all caught up to speed with my history. I’ve currently left freelance photography behind and I’m back in school to become an Art Director. I don’t take on nearly as much paid photography work as I used to but I still shoot often. I can’t help but do what I love.
